CCleaner!!!

CCleaner is a very very very useful tool! It is great for deleting temp files (plus any other files that needs to be deleted and just taking up Hard drive space). Not only does this dig deep into the system and remove files you don’t use anymore, but it also can clean up the registry, edit the start up to where you tell it what programs will automatically start up from boot. A new feature they added not too long ago was the feature of deleting the system restore points within Windows. I use CCleaner to help delete temp (When I say “temp” I mean temporary files) files to also defeat viruses, trojans, spyware, malware, basically all of the malicious files that are out there. I would highly suggest using this product! It is free once again! If you readers couldn’t tell I’m all about using freeware!

Aus Logic Disk Defragmenter!

Aus Logic makes one of the best disk defragmenters I’ve ever seen. Compared to the built in Windows defragger that you have to run about 10 times to finally get a good defrag with Aus Logic I’ve only had to run it a max of 2 times, but once usually does it. It really depends on how defragged your hard drive is. Oh yes, I haven’t mentioned that this is also freeware so it is available to anyone. It also has a very easy interface to use. Click 1 button to analyze and defrag then wait until it is completed. Another perk of this software is that you can check mark a box while it’s defragging for if you want it to shutdown your PC after completing the defragment.

AVG Anti-virus Version 9

Not too long ago AVG released version 9 of their Anti-Virus. I highly suggest using this product. First off not only does it do a great job of preventing / removing malicious files (if it gets on your PC) but it is also FREE! Can’t beat that by any means. I’ve been using AVG for over 4 years now and I am very happy and satisfied with their software! They really know what they are doing!

LogMeIn Hamachi – VPN

Hamachi is one of the best VPN programs I’ve ever used. It’s really easy to use and FREE. I even use this to create a tunnel to my second PC to run backups from anywhere! It’s really handy!

Malwarebyte’s Anti-Malware

This is a pretty cool piece of software. This program runs similar to Spybot S&D. It goes off of definitions that you download and then scans your pc for those malicious files. What is really great about this program is that it knows about different malicious programs than other programs such as Spybot, AVG Antispyware, as well as Adaware SE/2007. I would highly recommend this program if Spybot or any other program can’t remove a particular program on your computer. Additionally this program can get rid of most Virtumonde viruses with ease. I’m not guaranteeing it but it does work its magic. I have recently used this program to remove a lot of malicious files and it does a great job! This program is entirely free!!!

AVG Antivirus Free v8.0

Today I received a warning on my computer saying how I needed to update AVG Antivirus. I’m thinking ok… I go to their website and they released version 8.0 for all of the products including their free version. I thought this was very interesting so I thought I’d download it and see how it compares to the previous version 7.5. It is drastically different.

First off I found out that they kinda got rid of their Antispyware and Antiroot programs (Free versions.) What they have done from my point of view so far is integrate the Antispyware feature into the Antivirus software itself. I thought this was very clever of them to do. Instead of multiple programs integrate them all. If you want the AVG Antiroot software you’ll have to purchase it in one of their packages they offer.

The free version (Antivirus) seems to be nearly the same as the previous version it just has more functions and capabilities, which it should.

It offers all of these features (and this is the FREE version)…

• Antivirus
• Antispyware
• E-mail Scanner
• Link Scanner
• Resident Shield
• and of course a Update Manager!

I ran it soon after installing it and it actually found adware that was on my pc when both AVG (FREE) Antivirus, Antispyware as well as Spybot Search and destroy couldn’t find. I had quite a few pieces of adware too! AVG 8.0 detected it right away! I am extremely impressed with this software and I’ve only had it installed for a few hours now. I would highly recommend downloading and installing this! It is by far one of the best if not the best antivirus program I’ve ever used!!!!

YODM 3D(Desktop Manager) Program

YODM 3D (Yet Another Desktop Manager) is one of the best freeware versions of a desktop manager out there. It is easy to use and configure to your liking. With this simple program installed on your 2000, XP, or even Vista computer it allows you to be able to use 4 desktops at one time. You can literally run 4 different programs; one on each screen if you would want too! Really the only requirement you really need is DirectX 9.0. One would think it would take a lot of RAM usage / be a resource hog, but it really isn’t. This 2.5 Megabyte install doesn’t use to much RAM once installed and used. I would highly recommend it to individuals that multi task a lot and need the extra desktops.

ATTN: Concerning AVG Antispyware

I have recently found out that AVG the maker of AVG Antispyware is going to stop releasing updates for the free version of the Antispyware. Meaning they want you to purchase the full version. They are still making definitions for this program, but eventually it will be setup to where only paid customers will be able to download the updates.

I would highly suggest purchasing the full version if you enjoy their product.

Virtumonde Virus Fix

The Virtumonde Virus is a real nasty one. I have found 2 programs that will most likely eliminate it (It’s not 100% but it works pretty well.) The first program I would suggest running is called VundoFix. This program is specifically made to find and remove a large variety of the Virtumonde Viruses. It is just an executable, so just download (the latest version) and run it from your desktop and let it run its course. At the end of the scan if it has found something you then say remove and between the scan running and it removing the virus it can take a decent amount of time to work. If the VundoFix program can find the Virus, but can’t delete it for whatever reason I have found a second program that works really well as a backup to VundoFix. Killbox is another executable program that can “Kill” running processes/ files. It can also delete files that won’t allow you to delete them. So basically it can override the delete function. In VundoFix it comes with a directory for example “C:\Windows\System32\file name” Use VundoFix to come up with the needed directory and type that in in the field in Killbox (Make sure the directory is exactly the same as what it says in VundoFix. Very Important!!!) Once you have typed that in click on the red “X” icon next to where the directory is. It should then delete the file, but in case it throws you an error saying it can’t be deleted because it might be running then select the option to delete on restart. Between these two programs I have successfully been able to remove well over a dozen different types of Virtumonde Viruses.

PS: I would also suggest running Spybot: Search and Destroy. Spybot can get rid of some of the versions of Virtumonde, but run it at least twice, if it’s gone after the second scan then it’s off of your PC otherwise use VundoFix and Killbox.

Remote Desktop Software (VNC, LogMeIn)

Currently there are several programs that are made well for remoting into a PC (accessing a computer elsewhere.) I would say that the program VNC, which is free (by the way) is a great program for remoting into a PC from the same network just from a different location. Since it is free it has some restrictions of course. For the most part it’s really nice and fairly easy to use. *You also have to install the software on the computer you want to remote into. * In order to make this program work you will need to know the IP (Internet Protocol) address of the computer you want to get access too. For example an IP would look like. 192.168.1.16 (4 sets of numbers)

The other program / website works a little better than VNC and is also free. What you do is go to www.logmein.com and make an account (It’s free) and download and install the software accordingly. You also have to install the software on the computer you want to remote into. Once you have the software installed on all the machines you want / ever need to remote into then it’s really simple. All you have to do is Log into the site (www.logmein.com) and click on the according computer you want to take over. Type in the needed passwords and that’s it.  Any questions please ask.

You will have to signup/ register, but once you’ve done that you’re fine.***
